Transformers One is an American animated science fiction action film based on Hasbro’s Transformers toy line. It is the eighth installment overall of the Transformers film series, as well as the first animated feature film based on the franchise since The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Directed by Josh Cooley and written by Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari, and Bobby Rubio, the ensemble voice cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm.

In September 2015, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, who were previously a part of the shared universe writers’ room, were hired to write a film that will explore the origins of Cybertron with the working title of “Transformers One”.

In April 2020, Josh Cooley signed on as director of the animated prequel film. Barrer and Ferrari will co-write a new draft of their previous script, with Cooley. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian serve as producers.

The story takes place entirely on Cybertron and explores the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron, “separate and apart” from what has been portrayed in the live-action films.

The project will be a joint-venture production between Hasbro Entertainment, Paramount Animation, and Paramount Pictures.

In December 2022, the title was reported to be Transformers: A New Generation, though producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura stated in April 2023 that the title had yet to be finalized. The producer stated that the plot will center around the origins of the Transformers and explore the events that lead Optimus and Megatron to go from being best friends to becoming enemies, with the plot being mapped out to progress over a trilogy of films, allowing for the Cybertronian characters to progress to who they are in the live-action film series.

Industrial Light & Magic is returning to provide the animation for the film, following the franchise’s first six installments. Later that month, the title was officially confirmed as Transformers One, along with its voice cast consisting of Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax / Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-One, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.

Transformers One was screened as a work-in-progress at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 10, 2024, where it received positive reactions from both the audience and on social media. The film had its official premiere in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 20, 2024. It is being shown in various formats, including RealD 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX. Originally scheduled for release on July 19, 2024, the film was first delayed to September 13, before shifting again by a week to avoid competition with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

In the United States and Canada, Transformers One was released alongside The Substance and Never Let Go. The film earned $9.6 million on its first day, including $3.4 million from Wednesday and Thursday night previews.
