The first season was released on November 23, 2022, three weeks after its release, it became the second-most watched English-language Netflix series in the history of the platform, reaching an estimated 150 million households and totaling 1 billion viewing hours by December 2022.
About Wednesday Season 2 TV Series
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar stated that the second season would expand upon the friendship between Wednesday and Enid while also evolving Wednesday’s relationship with her mother, Morticia. Jenna Ortega noted that the season would “lean into the horror aspect” while “ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday”.
Preparations for a second season commenced in December 2022, following Amazon’s acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
The series was renewed for a second season in January 2023, and Jenna Ortega now serves as producer.
In April 2024, Steve Buscemi joined the cast of the series as the new principal of Nevermore Academy, alongside Thandiwe Newton in an undisclosed role. In May, most of the cast were announced, while in November, Lady Gaga joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
The second season began filming in May 2024 in Ireland. Jenna Ortega’s schedule for the show had been coordinated with the Scream franchise team before the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which reportedly led to her exit from Scream 7 (2026) due to a scheduling conflict. However, in April 2025, Ortega refuted this explanation, stating that her departure was actually due to the exits of Melissa Barrera, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and Tyler Gillett from the project. As of August 2024, four episodes of the show had already been completed. Filming for the second series had wrapped by early December 2024 and is set to release in 2025.
