About The Greatest of All Time Movie:
The Greatest of All Time (also known as The GOAT), is a Tamil action thriller film, that features Vijay in dual roles. The cast also includes Prabhu Deva, Prashanth, Ajmal Ameer, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Sneha, Mohan, Laila, and Jayaram.
It was directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram, Kalpathi S. Ganesh, and Kalpathi S. Suresh under the banner of AGS Entertainment. The film has music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, while Siddhartha Nuni handles the cinematography, and Venkat Raajen does the editing.
The film was announced in May 2023 under the tentative title Thalapathy 68, as it is Vijay’s 68th film in a leading role. The film’s official title, The Greatest of All Time, was announced on December 31, 2023. Initially, Atlee was reported to direct the project, but subsequently, Venkat Prabhu was brought on board.
According to reports Vijay was paid ₹200 crore (US$25 million) for the film, which would make him the highest-paid film actor in India.
Vijay will be showcasing a dual role, portraying both an elderly and a younger man, and he will adopt a clean-shaven appearance for one of these characters. Meenakshi Chaudhary and Sneha have been chosen as the female leads, with Chaudhary’s role aligned with Vijay’s younger character, while Sneha will be paired opposite his older persona.
In mid-July 2023, Siddhartha Nuni was announced as the cinematographer for the film. According to him, he had used three cameras to shoot a significant sequence; something he had never done before. This marks his third Tamil film after Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (2022) and Captain Miller (2024), and his first collaboration with Vijay and Prabhu.
Principal photography for the film began on October 3, 2023, at Prasad Labs in Chennai. The Greatest of All Time is currently being shot sporadically in several legs, with filming locations including Chennai, Thailand, Hyderabad, Sri Lanka, Pondicherry, Thiruvananthapuram, Russia, and the United States.
The Greatest of All Time was released worldwide in theaters on September 5, 2024. In addition to the original Tamil version, the film was also released with dubbed versions in Telugu and Hindi.
Initially, the film was planned to be released in June 2024, coinciding with Vijay’s 50th birthday; however, it was delayed due to the extensive post-production and VFX works.
GOAT was initially granted a U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after muting several instances of profanity, resulting in an official runtime of 179 minutes. However, just days later, the CBFC imposed further censorship, leading to a revised version with a final runtime of 183 minutes. This revision included an additional four minutes of footage, while still maintaining the U/A certificate. It became Vijay’s second-longest film, following Nanban (2012).
According to Archana Kalpathi, The Greatest of All Time has already recovered its ₹400 crore (US$48 million) budget through satellite, digital, music, and theatrical rights. The overseas theatrical rights were sold to Phars Films for ₹53 crore (US$6.4 million), while Romeo Pictures acquired the distribution rights for Tamil Nadu for ₹70 crore (US$8.4 million).
The digital streaming rights were acquired by Netflix. The film began streaming on Netflix on 3 October 2024 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages. The platform purchased the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada-language versions for ₹125 crore (US$16 million) and the Hindi-language version for ₹25 crore (US$3.1 million). The satellite rights were acquired by Zee Tamil for ₹93 crore.
Music:
This is music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja’s second collaboration with Vijay after Pudhiya Geethai (2003), and his tenth collaboration with Venkat Prabhu. T-Series acquired the audio rights for ₹26 crore (US$3.3 million).
