About The Mandalorian and Grogu Movie
In 2017, director Jon Favreau pitched a Mandalorian-themed Star Wars series to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. At the same time, animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008–2020) producer Dave Filoni was developing a similar idea, so Kennedy encouraged them to team up.
Their collaboration led to The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars series, which premiered on Disney+ in November 2019. After its successful debut, Disney’s CCO Alan Horn hinted at a possible film featuring the series’ lead, Din Djarin, and Favreau later confirmed the potential for spin-offs or movies exploring the show’s characters.
In November, Dave Filoni revealed that he was now the CCO at Lucasfilm and would be directly involved in the planning of future films and series.

Principal photography for the film began several weeks earlier than planned in mid-2024 in California, under the working title Thunder Alley, and lasted about 92 days. The project involved around 54 cast members, 3,500 extras, and 500 crew.
In early August 2024, Favreau and Filoni confirmed filming was underway and revealed returning elements like Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios from Rebels, the Anzellan species, and a new version of the Razor Crest. Sigourney Weaver confirmed her casting in late August, and filming entirely wrapped by early December 2024.
The film was shot entirely in California. The production received a $21.8 million tax credit, one of the largest ever awarded by the state.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first Star Wars film in seven years, since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker—the final installment of the sequel trilogy after The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017), and the concluding episode of the nine-part Skywalker saga. The Rise of Skywalker grossed $1.077 billion worldwide, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2019.
