Storyline:

Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) is Long Island penny stockbroker who serves almost two years in prison for refusing to co-operate in a huge 1990s securities fraud case that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world, including mob infiltration.

About Movie:

The Wolf of Wall Street is an American biographical black comedy directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Terence Winter, based on Jordan Belfort’s 2007 memoir. The film chronicles Belfort’s rise and fall as a stockbroker in New York City, focusing on the corrupt practices at his firm, Stratton Oakmont, which led to his eventual downfall.

It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Favreau, and Jean Dujardin. This marked DiCaprio’s fifth collaboration with Scorsese.

In 2007, DiCaprio and Warner Bros. secured the film rights to Belfort’s memoir for $1 million, but production stalled due to content restrictions. Independent studio Red Granite Pictures later took over.

Filming began on August 8, 2012, in New York City, with additional scenes shot in New Jersey. Jonah Hill, who used Vitamin D powder as a substitute for cocaine, was hospitalized after inhaling large amounts during filming.

The movie was shot primarily on film, but scenes with green screen effects or low lighting were captured digitally using the Arri Alexa system, with around 400-450 VFX shots.

The Wolf of Wall Street premiered in New York City on December 17, 2013, and was released nationwide on December 25, becoming the first major American film to be distributed exclusively through digital means. It grossed $406.9 million globally, making it Scorsese’s highest-grossing film.

The film drew controversy for its graphic depictions of sex, drug use, and profanity (notably setting a Guinness World Record for most uses of the word “fuck” in a film), as well as its moral ambiguity. Initially rated NC-17 by the MPAA, it was re-edited to receive an R rating. The film was also embroiled in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad corruption scandal, with producer Riza Aziz implicated; he was later arrested in 2019 and discharged on bail in 2020.

Despite its controversies, the film received widespread acclaim, appearing on numerous “best of the year” lists. It garnered five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Scorsese), Best Actor (DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Hill), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Winter). DiCaprio won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, with the film also nominated for Best Picture in that category.
