Storyline:

A film about two homicide detectives’ (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt) desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world’s ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic “John Doe” (Kevin Spacey) sermonizes to Detectives Somerset and Mills — one sin at a time. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer’s terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. The seasoned and cultured but jaded Somerset researches the Seven Deadly Sins in an effort to understand the killer’s modus operandi while the bright but green and impulsive Detective Mills (Pitt) scoffs at his efforts to get inside the mind of a killer..

Seven (stylized as Se7en) is an American crime thriller directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Kevin Walker. The film stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, with Gwyneth Paltrow and John C. McGinley in supporting roles.

Walker based the script on his personal experiences after moving to New York City during the late 1980s, a time of rising crime and drug addiction. Initially optioned by an Italian company, the rights were sold to New Line Cinema after financial difficulties. Studio executives were opposed to the script’s grim ending, but Fincher, looking to recover from the disappointment of his debut Alien 3 (1992), agreed to direct only if the original ending remained unchanged.

Filming began on December 12, 1994, and wrapped on March 10, 1995, with a budget of $33–$34 million. Shot entirely in downtown Los Angeles, the film’s production included minimal rewrites, as Walker believed Fincher should interpret the script his own way. Though Fincher had hoped to shoot in Oakland for its visual appeal, the tight schedule required them to stay in L.A.

Seven premiered on September 19, 1995, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, attracting over 800 guests, including notable figures like Kevin Spacey, Quentin Tarantino, and Jennifer Tilly.

Despite early concerns that its dark tone and violent content would limit its success, Seven became a sleeper hit, grossing $327.3 million worldwide and ranking as the seventh highest-grossing film of the year.
