Storyline:

Three estranged, and vastly different adult sisters, Rain, Ivy, and Daisy, return home for the fiftieth wedding anniversary of their parents, Herb and Audry Homer. What should be a standard celebration of their parent’s love for each other is thrown into emotional chaos when Herb announces that he is dying from an aggressive brain tumor which is nearly impossible to treat. His final wish to have one last perfect weekend with his family sends everyone into a whirlwind of buried family secrets and conflict.

Home Free is a Canadian drama film directed by Avi Federgreen, who co-wrote it with Reese Eveneshen. The film stars Natalie Brown, Michelle Nolden, Tara Spencer-Nairn, Art Hindle, Jill Frappier, and Al Mukadam.

Home Free has been a long-standing passion project for director Avi Federgreen. After first reading the script in May 2015, he spent several years in development, working to bring the film to life.

Many cast members participated in a virtual table read of the script in May 2020. They quickly fell in love with the story and have stayed attached to the project since that day. The film was shot in spring 2023 in the Paris, Ontario area.

Because of the smaller budget of the film, there weren’t the usual amenities that come with most film productions. There were no specialized trailers for talent or crew. The cast had a small green room set up in a recreational room on one side of the house. The production office was in the basement of the house, across from it was the laundry room where the costume department was set up. The camera and grip team occupied the entertainment room. The art department moved from room to room depending on the needs of the production. Meanwhile, hair and makeup were set up in the garage which also doubled as the lunch room for the production team. The cast and crew worked closely together and became a true family during the making of the film.

Home Free premiered at the 2024 Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival on September 18, 2024.
