Storyline:

Theodore is a lonely man in the final stages of his divorce. When he’s not working as a letter writer, his down time is spent playing video games and occasionally hanging out with friends. He decides to purchase the new OS1, which is advertised as the world’s first artificially intelligent operating system, “It’s not just an operating system, it’s a consciousness,” the ad states. Theodore quickly finds himself drawn in with Samantha, the voice behind his OS1. As they start spending time together they grow closer and closer and eventually find themselves in love. Having fallen in love with his OS, Theodore finds himself dealing with feelings of both great joy and doubt. As an OS, Samantha has powerful intelligence that she uses to help Theodore in ways others hadn’t, but how does she help him deal with his inner conflict of being in love with an OS?

Her is an American science-fiction romantic comedy-drama written, directed, and co-produced by Spike Jonze in his solo screenwriting debut. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson (voice), Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and Chris Pratt. The film is dedicated to James Gandolfini, Harris Savides, Maurice Sendak, and Adam Yauch.

Jonze came up with the idea in the early 2000s after reading an article about a website that enabled instant messaging with an AI program. He explored similar themes in his 2010 short film I’m Here before returning to develop Her, writing the first draft in just five months.

Filming took place in Los Angeles and Shanghai in 2012. Originally, Samantha Morton voiced Samantha, but was replaced by Scarlett Johansson in post-production, leading to additional scenes being shot in 2013.

Her premiered at the 2013 New York Film Festival and had a limited release in December, followed by a wide release in January 2014. The film was met with critical acclaim, particularly for the performances of Phoenix and Johansson, as well as Jonze’s writing and direction. With a budget of $23 million, it grossed over $48 million worldwide.

Her earned several prestigious awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and nominations for Best Picture and four other Oscars. Jonze also won the Golden Globe, Writers Guild, Critics’ Choice, and Saturn Awards for Best Screenplay.

In a 2016 BBC poll, Her was ranked the 84th-greatest film since 2000 and is now regarded as one of the best films of the 2010s and one of the finest sci-fi movies ever made.
