About Movie:
Scarface is an American crime drama directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone, starring Al Pacino. A remake of the 1932 film, which was based on Armitage Trail’s 1930 novel. The cast includes Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, Míriam Colón, and F. Murray Abraham.
Pacino was inspired to remake the 1932 Scarface after watching it, leading him and producer Martin Bregman to develop the project. Initially, Sidney Lumet was set to direct but was later replaced by De Palma, who brought on Stone to write the screenplay. De Palma dedicated the film to Howard Hawks and Ben Hecht, who directed and wrote the original version.
Filming took place over 24 weeks, from November 1982 to May 1983. Although set in Miami, most of the film was shot in Los Angeles, as the Miami Tourist Board feared the movie’s depiction of drugs and gangsters would harm tourism. One scene, however, was filmed at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in April 1983.
Scarface premiered in New York City on December 1, 1983, and was released nationwide by Universal Pictures on December 9. Despite earning $45 million domestically and $66 million worldwide, initial reviews criticized its extreme violence, profanity, and drug use. Cuban expatriates in Miami also objected to the portrayal of Cubans as criminals.
Over time, however, the film gained a more favorable reception, becoming recognized as one of the greatest gangster films ever made. Directors like Martin Scorsese have praised it, and Scarface has since achieved cult classic status, influencing pop culture, particularly in hip hop and gangsta rap, as well as in comics, TV shows, and video games.
