Storyline:
After it looks as if she’s left his life for good this time, Tom Hansen reflects back on the just over one year that he knew Summer Finn. For Tom, it was love at first sight when she walked into the greeting card company where he worked, she the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knew that Summer was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer did not believe in relationships or boyfriends – in her assertion, real life will always ultimately get in the way – Tom and Summer became more than just friends. Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer’s so-called relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it is Tom’s adolescent sister, Rachel, who is his voice of reason. After all is said and done, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not.
About Movie:
500 Days of Summer is an American comedy-drama directed by Marc Webb, with a screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, and produced by Mark Waters. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.
The film’s storyline was inspired by co-writer Scott Neustadter’s real-life experience. He based Summer on a woman he met while studying at the London School of Economics in 2002. Their relationship mirrored the film’s dynamic, with mutual affection but unreciprocated passion, a personal reflection Neustadter channeled into the script.
Originally set in San Francisco, the film’s location was shifted to Los Angeles, with various notable landmarks featured, such as the Los Angeles Music Center and the Fine Arts Building.
One of Tom’s favorite spots in the city, Angel’s Knoll, became a tourist hotspot after the film’s release but has been closed to the public since 2013 due to budget cuts.
The film, an independent production, was distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures and premiered at the 25th Sundance Film Festival. It garnered critical acclaim and grossed over $60 million worldwide, far exceeding its $7.5 million budget. 500 Days of Summer is often praised for its fresh take on romantic relationships and has been compared to films like Annie Hall (1977) and High Fidelity (2000). It is now regarded as a cult classic.
The film won Best Original Screenplay at the 14th Satellite Awards and Best Screenplay at the 25th Independent Spirit Awards. It also earned two Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
