Storyline:

In nineteenth-century Massachusetts, with their father away serving in the Civil War, the women of the March family–the loving matriarch, Marmee, and her four daughters, Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth–are left all alone to fend for themselves. Faced with genteel poverty, the fledgling author, Jo March, is struggling to make a name for herself in male-dominated New York City; considerate Meg is now married, and the artistically inclined, Amy, is in Paris with their affluent Aunt March. However, the news of talented Beth’s illness will reunite the sisters under the same roof. But, more than anything in the world–much to the disappointment of the handsome next-door neighbor, Theodore “Laurie” Laurence–the fiercely independent Jo yearns for freedom. Must all stories end with a wedding?

About Movie:

Little Women is an American coming-of-age period drama written and directed by Greta Gerwig, marking the seventh adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel. The film follows the lives of the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—in 19th-century Concord, Massachusetts.

It features an ensemble cast, including Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, and Chris Cooper.

Development began in 2013, with Amy Pascal producing from 2015 and Gerwig hired to write the screenplay in 2016. Drawing inspiration from Alcott’s other works, Gerwig completed the script in 2018 and was named director, making this her second solo directorial project.

Principal photography started in Boston in October 2018, primarily in Harvard, Massachusetts, with additional locations including Lancaster, Harvard University, Crane Beach, and Concord.

During filming, Gerwig discovered she was pregnant but kept it a secret. She enforced a cell phone ban on set, and cinematographer Yorick Le Saux shot the film on 35 mm film. After wrapping on December 16, 2018, Gerwig began editing the following day and screened the film for Sony Pictures executives on March 10, 2019, just days before giving birth.

Little Women premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on December 7, 2019, and was released in theaters on December 25, 2019. The film received critical acclaim, particularly for Gerwig’s screenplay and direction, as well as the cast’s performances, grossing $218 million worldwide.

It garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Pugh), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score, winning for Best Costume Design. It also received five BAFTA nominations, winning for Best Costume Design, and two Golden Globe nominations.
