About Movie:
Red Sparrow is an American spy thriller film directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Justin Haythe, based on Jason Matthews’ 2013 novel of the same name. The film features an ensemble cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Irons, and Ciarán Hinds.
Matthews, a former CIA officer, provided consultation during the production to ensure an accurate portrayal of espionage, drawing from historical Soviet “sexpionage” tactics and contemporary Russian use of kompromat.
Principal photography commenced on January 5, 2017, in Budapest and Dunaújváros, Hungary, with additional locations including Festetics Mansion in Dég, Hungary, as well as Bratislava, Slovakia, and Vienna, Austria.
During post-production, director Francis Lawrence gave Jennifer Lawrence the option to review a cut of the film and request the removal of any nude or sexual content. She chose not to request any deletions. However, the UK version of the film was edited to remove a garroting scene in order to secure a 15 certificate from the British Board of Film Classification.
Initially set for release on November 10, 2017, by 20th Century Fox, the film’s premiere was delayed to March 2, 2018, in favor of a less competitive time slot. Fox’s adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express was moved into Red Sparrow’s original release window. The film’s first trailer debuted on September 14, 2017.
Red Sparrow premiered at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., on February 15, 2018, and was released in the United States on March 2, 2018. It grossed $151 million globally, achieving modest box-office success. Critics offered mixed reviews, noting the film had “more style than substance” and citing its lengthy runtime and heavy reliance on graphic violence and sexual content, although Jennifer Lawrence’s performance received praise.
The film was screened at FEST in Belgrade on February 28, 2018, and released in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2018.
