Storyline:
Woman of the Hour is based on the stranger-than-fiction true story of Cheryl Bradshaw and Rodney Alcala. Bradshaw was a bachelorette on the hit ’70s TV matchmaking show The Dating Game and chose handsome and funny bachelor No. 3, Rodney Alcala. But behind Alcala’s charming facade was a deadly secret: He was a psychopathic serial killer.
About Movie:
- Some of Sheryl’s negative experiences as an aspiring actor reflect Anna Kendrick’s own. Kendrick said the comment on Sheryl’s breasts was “lifted verbatim from something that happened to me when I was 19.”
- The life and crimes of Rodney Alcala were first portrayed in The Dating Game Killer (2017).
- Rodney Alcala graduated from UCLA’s School of Fine Arts and later studied film under Roman Polanski at NYU. Kendrick cut a scene in which Alcala discusses Polanski’s 1977 accusation of drugging and raping 13-year-old Samantha Geimer.
- This film marks Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, where she also stars.
- Netflix acquired the film for $11 million after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
- Originally titled Rodney and Sheryl and later The Dating Game.
- Initially, Kendrick was set only to star. She found support to direct from Paul Feig (A Simple Favor, 2018) and Brittany Snow.
- Sally Field, Don Johnson, Burt Reynolds, and Michael Jackson made early appearances on The Dating Game (1965).
- Ed Burke, the “Dating Game” host, is a fictionalized version of Jim Lange.
- One of the makeup artists is based on Tracey Ullman’s character, Ruby Romaine.
- Based on a true story.
- Kendrick and Kelley Jakle, the woman photographed at the film’s start, co-starred in the Pitch Perfect series.
- Rodney Alcala, a Mexican-American born in Texas, is portrayed by Costa Rican actor Daniel Zovatto.
- Released theatrically in select countries.
- One of three films about 1970s North American television, along with Late Night with the Devil (2023) and Saturday Night (2024).
