Storyline:
Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) is the fiercely independent daughter of eccentric adventurer Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West), who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of twenty-one without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who, against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith, and inherently stubborn spirit, must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name “tomb raider”.—Warner Bros. Pictures
About Movie:
In 2007, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the film rights from Paramount Pictures for a potential Tomb Raider reboot, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer later purchasing a stake in 2009. GK Films secured the rights in 2011, with distribution set to be handled by MGM and Warner.
Initially, Megan Fox, Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Wilde, and Mila Kunis were rumored to play Lara Croft, though each declined. Later, Deadline Hollywood reported that Daisy Ridley was considered, but Ridley dismissed it as “the craziest rumor” she’d heard about herself.
In November 2015, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug joined the project, and Alicia Vikander was cast as Lara Croft in April 2016. Walton Goggins was announced as the villain in December 2016, with the rest of the cast unveiled in early 2017.
Principal photography began on January 23, 2017, in Cape Town, South Africa, and concluded on June 9, 2017, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, England. Exterior shots for Croft Manor were filmed at Wilton House in Wiltshire. The waterfall scene with the plane was shot at Lee Valley, near London, and was combined with footage from South Africa.
Visual effects were led by Scanline VFX with additional work by Method Studios, Rising Sun Pictures, Mr. X, Soho VFX, Zero VFX, and Factory VFX, supervised by Nick Crew and Paul Linden.
For the film’s release, Mattel produced a Lara Croft Barbie, styled after Alicia Vikander and featuring full articulation. Designed by Bill Greening as a Black Label Collector doll, it was released on February 19, 2018. Square Enix also collaborated with Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, adding Lara Croft as a playable character.
Tomb Raider premiered on March 2, 2018, in Berlin, Germany, with a U.S. release on March 16, 2018, by Warner Bros.
A sequel was initially in development with Vikander set to return but was cancelled in 2022 after MGM’s rights to the Tomb Raider series expired, while Vikander stepped down from the role. Another reboot film, set to be part of a shared universe that will include a television series and a video game, is in development at Amazon Studios.
