About Movie:
I Know What You Did Last Summer is the first installment in the franchise, loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel. It follows four teenage friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer a year after covering up a car accident in which they supposedly killed a man. The film draws inspiration from the “Hook” urban legend and slasher films like Prom Night (1980) and The House on Sorority Row (1982).
Written by Kevin Williamson, the screenplay was rushed into production by Columbia Pictures after the success of Scream (1996), also written by Williamson. The film is based on Duncan’s suspense novel, which centers on teenagers involved in a hit-and-run accident.
Scottish director Jim Gillespie was chosen to direct after Williamson’s suggestion. Jennifer Love Hewitt later stated in 2008 that Gillespie was her favorite director to work with. Principal photography began on March 31, 1997, and was shot over ten weeks, with seven weeks of night shoots in small-town locations. The final boat sequence was filmed on the Cape Fear River, where the crew faced difficulties due to volatile waters.
Released on October 17, 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer received mixed critical reviews but was a commercial success, grossing $125.3 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. It topped the U.S. box office for three weeks and became a cultural reference, credited with helping revive the slasher genre in the 1990s.
The film was followed by a sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), with Hewitt, Prinze Jr., and Watson reprising their roles. A straight-to-video sequel, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), introduced a new cast. A television series adaptation premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2021, and a direct legacy sequel to the first two films is set for release on July 18, 2025.
