About Movie:
Sonic the Hedgehog is a action-adventure comedy film based on Sega’s video game series. Directed by Jeff Fowler, with a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the film stars James Marsden and Jim Carrey, alongside Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic. The story follows Sonic, a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog with supersonic speed, who teams up with a town sheriff to thwart the villainous Dr. Robotnik.
Development began in the 1990s but gained momentum when Sony Pictures acquired the rights in 2013. Fowler was attached to direct in 2016, and Paramount Pictures took over the project in 2017 after Sony put it in turnaround. The cast was finalized by August 2018, and filming occurred in Vancouver and Vancouver Island from September to October 2018. After backlash to the initial trailer in April 2019, Paramount delayed the film by three months to redesign Sonic’s character.
The film premiered at Paramount Pictures’ studio lot on January 25, 2020, before its theatrical release on February 14. While reviews were mixed, it broke the record for the largest opening weekend for a video game film in the U.S. and Canada, grossing $320 million worldwide. It became the sixth highest-grossing film of 2020 and the highest-grossing video game adaptation in North America.
The sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, was released in 2022, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set to debut in December 2024. A spin-off miniseries, Knuckles, premiered on Paramount+ in 2024.
