But when their impromptu tryst is thwarted by a surreal interruption, Sarah must join Nyles in embracing the idea that nothing really matters, and they begin wreaking spirited havoc on the wedding celebration.
About Movie:
The project was announced in November 2018 after securing a tax credit to film in California. Due to the limitations of the tax credit, production was confined to the Los Angeles area instead of Palm Springs. Andy Samberg was confirmed as the lead. In March 2019, Cristin Milioti and J.K. Simmons joined the cast, followed by Camila Mendes in April.
Filming commenced in April 2019 and lasted 21 days, featuring the Cabazon Dinosaurs as a notable location.
Palm Springs premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2020. Shortly after, Neon and Hulu acquired distribution rights, reportedly paying $17,500,000.69, breaking the Sundance sale record by $0.69. Later reports suggested the deal was closer to $22 million, factoring in guarantees.
The film was released digitally on Hulu and in select drive-in theaters on July 10, 2020. Hulu reported that it set an opening weekend record, achieving the highest number of hours watched in its first three days for any film on the platform. By August 2020, 8.1% of Hulu subscribers had watched the film in its first month. In November, it ranked as the 26th-most watched straight-to-streaming title of 2020, according to Variety.
In January 2021, Hulu released a commentary cut featuring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, director Max Barbakow, and writer Andy Siara, marking the platform’s first commentary release.
