Storyline:

In the heart of the 1970s, amidst a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making back-up from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto – a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please – deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons, and pull off their first missions. When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

About Minions: The Rise of Gru Movie:

Minions: The Rise of Gru is the sequel to Minions (2015), a prequel to Despicable Me (2010), and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise.

Minions: The Rise of Gru directed by Kyle Balda and co-directed by Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val (in Ableton’s feature directorial debut).

In January 2017, Universal Pictures and Illumination announced the sequel to their animated film, Minions (2015).

The film began production in July 2017, with Brad Ableson added as a co-director. In May 2019, the film’s title was revealed as Minions: The Rise of Gru.

In December 2019, it was announced that Pierre Coffin and Steve Carell would be reprising their roles as the Minions and Gru, respectively. Carell was paid $12.5 million for his involvement.

Production of the film shifted to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, following the temporary closure of Illumination Studios Paris.

To incorporate 1970s culture and environment in the film, Wade Eastwood and Ric Meyers were hired as creative consultants while Flora Zhao joined in as a cultural consultant on Chinese culture.

The film was officially completed on July 1, 2020.

The film was dedicated in memory of animator Madeline Montero, who died during the production of the film.

Deadline Hollywood reported Universal spent $140 million promoting the film, and a total of $285 million on promotion and tie-ins, the biggest-ever campaign for a Despicable Me film.

Toy company Mattel announced that it had entered a three-year deal to create merchandise based on the film. Lego released two sets for the film in 2020.

A collaboration with Minecraft, featuring content from the film as well as content from the overall franchise, was released in 2021. Similarly, a collaboration with the film was made within the Roblox game Adopt Me! IHOP created a special menu based on the film.

After being delayed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Minions: The Rise of Gru had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 1, by Universal Pictures.

The film received generally positive reviews from critics; some deemed it an improvement over its predecessor, with praise earned for its score, animation, humor, voice performances (particularly Carell’s), and aesthetic, although its plot was criticized. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $939 million worldwide and making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2022.

Minions: The Rise of Gru was released as a digital download in August 2022. This was followed by a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release, and a Peacock streaming release in September.

As part of an 18-month deal, it streamed on Peacock for four months, before moving to Netflix for another ten in January 2023, and is set to return on Peacock for the last four that November. This was the best-selling home release of September. Blu-ray accounted for 48 percent of its sales. By the end of 2022, the physical release had earned about $14 million.
