Storyline:

The film story deals with Sivan a well-respected don in the area of Madurai. After his driver is killed in an altercation with a few enemies, including a rowdy cop, he takes the driver’s son Shakthi as his own. Shakthi grows up with a vengeful hatred towards the Police uniform and other Khaki clothing. Even towards his eventual lover, initially hating, but then seeing her good side, But it is when his Father desires him to wear the uniform, that turns the tables on the illegal work of Sivan. How Shakthi deals with his Father, and an unknown assailant forms the crux of the story.

• In September 2013, it was reported that Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal would be playing police officers in the film.
• Nisha Agarwal was rumored to be performing in the film, but she denied these rumors on Twitter, stating that she had not been approached for a film role.
• The opening ceremony for the film was held on 11 March 2013 at R. B. Choudary’s Chennai office. The first schedule of film shooting took off on 13 May in Madurai and Karaikudi with Mohanlal and Poornima Bhagyaraj.
• Jilla was theatrically released on 10 January 2014 and received generally positive reviews from critics. Jilla completed a 100-day theatrical run on 19 April 2014. The film earned ₹85 crore in its entire run at the box office. The film was a commercial success. It was also screened in Japan in 2020.
• The film received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences who praised the cast performances (particularly Mohanlal and Vijay), background score, and action sequences, while the length was criticized and consequently trimmed by ten minutes.
• The satellite rights of the film were purchased by Sun TV for a record price of ₹16 crores (US$2.0 million).
• Jilla’s opening netted around ₹10 million (US$130,000) in Tamil Nadu alone. The film grossed around ₹25 million (US$310,000) worldwide on its opening day and ₹70 million (US$880,000) worldwide in its extended five-day weekend
• In July 2017, Rishtey Cineplex Hindi TV channel held the Television Rating Point ranking #3 for the telecast of the Hindi dubbed version titled Policewala Gunda 2.
