Legendary General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.—Columbia Pictures
About Movie:
After Earth is an American post-apocalyptic action-adventure film directed and co-produced by M. Night Shyamalan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gary Whitta. The film is loosely inspired by an original story concept from Will Smith.
It marks the second collaboration between Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith, following The Pursuit of Happyness (2006). The production was backed by Overbrook Entertainment, co-owned by Will Smith, his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, and their business partner James Lassiter, with Columbia Pictures handling distribution. John Rusk served as a co-producer and was also the first assistant director.
In July 2011, Will Smith visited Costa Rica with a large team, including Shyamalan, to scout filming locations such as Arenal Volcano and local beaches. Shyamalan also conducted research at Valley Forge Military Academy for the film’s military themes, as Jaden was cast as a future military cadet.
Filming commenced in February 2012, primarily in Costa Rica, Humboldt County, and Aston. After Earth was notable for being the first Sony film shot and presented in 4K digital format, utilizing the Sony CineAlta F65 camera. A skydiving scene required a Canon Cinema EOS C500 camera for specific shots. Cinematographer Peter Suschitzky selected the Sony F65 over other formats due to its advantages in digital projection.
The film premiered in IMAX on May 31, 2013. However, it received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics who criticized its narrative, visual effects, performances by both Will and Jaden Smith, and Shyamalan’s direction. Despite these critiques, After Earth grossed $243.8 million worldwide against a budget of $130 million.
