Storyline:

Twenty years after their last holiday at a fading vacation resort, Sophie reflects on the rare time spent with her loving and idealistic father Calum. At 11-years-old, as the world of adolescence creeps into Sophie’s view, Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Sophie’s recollections become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t.

• The film is loosely based on Charlotte Wells’ own personal experience of a holiday she went on with her father.
• Filming took place in Ölüdeniz, Turkey.
• Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio play father and daughter in this film, even though there is only 14 years difference in their actual ages.
• According to Paul Mescal in an interview, he and Frankie Corio spent two weeks prior to filming in a hotel resort on holiday together to form the bond that was needed to portray the father-daughter relationship once filming began.
• Director Charlotte Wells auditioned over 800 girls for the lead role of Sophie, before landing on newcomer Frankie Corio.
• The film received four nominations at the 76th BAFTA Awards, where Charlotte Wells won for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Paul Mescal was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards.
• Aftersun was named one of the best films of 2022 by the National Board of Review and was awarded top place by Sight and Sound on its poll for the best films of 2022.
