Storyline:

While Korea was occupied by the Japanese Army in 1933, a group of exiled rebels planned to assassinate the Japanese Commander in Japanese-occupied Korea. However, the only person capable of carrying out the assassination is currently in prison. The Resistance must therefore devise a jailbreak to free the hitman and, in the process, uncover which among them is a traitor.

About Assassination Movie:

Assassination (Korean: 암살) is a South Korean period action thriller film directed by Choi Dong-hoon, who co-wrote it with Lee Ki-cheol. The film stars Jun Ji-hyun, Lee Jung-jae, Ha Jung-woo, Oh Dal-su and Cho Jin-woong.

With a budget of ₩18 billion (or US$16 million), it was filmed in both Shanghai and Seoul for five months. A special set of 13,500 square meters was created in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, to recreate the Seosomun Street in Gyeongseong. The rest of the filming took place at the Shanghai set in Chedun, which is 27 times the size of the Hapcheon set in South Gyeongsang Province.

According to reports Lee Jung-jae lost over 15 kg for the role.

Assassination was released on July 22, 2015. The film has grossed a total of US$77 million from 11.79 million admissions, making it the highest-grossing Korean film of 2015 as well as the eighth all-time-highest-grossing film in Korean cinema history. The film earned CN¥46.959 million at the Chinese box office.

The film won Best Film at the 36th Blue Dragon Film Awards and 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards.

Novelist Choi Jong-rim sued director Choi Dong-hoon, Caper Film, and Showbox on August 10, 2015, alleging that elements from Assassination resembled his book Korean Memories. Choi sought 10 billion (US$8.5 million) won in damages and a theater injunction. Caper Film countered that the characters differed significantly, and the court ruled on August 19, 2015, denying Choi’s injunction, stating abstract summaries aren’t protected by copyright, and historical figures in both works aren’t a basis for similarity.
