It is a sequel to The Black Phone (2021), which in turn is an adaptation of the 2004 short story by Joe Hill. Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora are all returning for the film’s sequel. The film is directed by Scott Derrickson and written by C. Robert Cargill and Derrickson. Derrickson also directed the previous film, The Black Phone.

In June 2022, Scott Derrickson hinted that he was open to directing a sequel if the first film was successful. Following the blockbuster success of The Black Phone, which earned more than $160 million worldwide and global critical acclaim, Universal Pictures announces the sequel.

In August 2022, Derrickson and Hill confirmed that there were discussions with the studio about making a sequel. In November 2023, it was reported that all of the major cast members would reprise their roles from the first film.

Principal photography began in Toronto on November 4, 2024, under the working title Mysterium, and concluded on January 23, 2025.

Black Phone 2 Storyline (Plot)

The phone is ringing again. As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, his sister begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.

Black Phone 2 is scheduled to be released on October 17, 2025. The film was originally set to be released on June 27, 2025. It will be released alongside Good Fortune, Blue Moon, and Truth & Treason.

As of now, the official production budget for Black Phone 2 has not yet been made public. However, considering that the original film, The Black Phone (2021), was produced on a low budget of approximately $16–18 million and grossed $161.4 million worldwide at the box office, it is expected that the budget for the sequel should be within a similar range or slightly higher based on the returning actors and the addition of filmmaker Scott Derrickson.
