Storyline:

Thirty years after the events of Blade Runner (1982), a new Blade Runner, L.A.P.D. Officer “K” (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. Blade Runner 2049 is a 2017 American epic neo-noir science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, serving as a sequel to the 1982 classic Blade Runner. The screenplay was written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, with a story by Fancher.

The film stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, with Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto in supporting roles. Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos reprise their roles as Rick Deckard and Gaff, respectively.

Plans for a sequel to Blade Runner began in the 1990s but faced delays due to licensing issues. Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson eventually acquired the rights, with Ridley Scott, the director of the original film, stepping down to serve as an executive producer. Villeneuve was brought on board to direct.

The film was financed through a partnership between Alcon Entertainment and Sony Pictures, with Warner Bros. distributing in North America and Sony handling international distribution.

Filming began in July 2016 in Hungary, after initial scouting in London proved unfeasible due to a lack of available soundstages. Principal photography lasted until November 2016. Cinematographer Roger Deakins collaborated closely with Villeneuve to craft the film’s visual style, drawing inspiration from various locations across Hungary and Slovakia.

The film’s marketing began with a teaser trailer in December 2016, followed by full trailers in May and July 2017.

Blade Runner 2049 premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on October 3, 2017, and was released in the U.S. on October 6. It received critical acclaim, particularly for its performances, direction, cinematography, and its faithful continuation of the original film’s themes and aesthetics.

However, despite this praise, it was a box-office disappointment, grossing $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $150–185 million, falling short of its estimated break-even point of $400 million.

The film won several awards, including Academy Awards for Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins) and Best Visual Effects, and received nominations in five other categories. It also won two British Academy Film Awards, for Best Cinematography and Best Special Visual Effects. A sequel television series, Blade Runner 2099, is currently in development at Amazon Studios, with Ridley Scott returning as executive producer.
