Storyline:
The film is based on a series of real-life crime events in Bengal between 1998 and 2005. The film follows Bikram, a Bohurupi in rural Bengal, whose life leads him into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase with SI Sumanta Ghosal after a major bank robbery. The story features a dramatic chase, with Pori as Sumanta’s wife and Jhimli as Bikram’s partner.

Bohurupi is a Bengali action drama film directed and produced by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. The film is based on a chain of real-life events in the timeline between 1998 and 2005. It stars Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, and Koushani Mukherjee in the lead roles.
This film marks the second collaboration between the directorial duo and Abir Chatterjee, following Raktabeej. It also represents the first collaboration of Ritabhari Chakraborty and Koushani Mukherjee with the director duo.
Filming for Bohurupi began on March 12, 2024, with a Pooja ceremony at the shooting location. The film was shot across 84 locations, including Kolkata, Taki, Baranagar, Bantala, Barrackpore, Bolpur, Beldanga, and Bethuadahari, over 34 days. Additional scenes were filmed at Kalikapur Rajabari and Aushgram in Bardhaman. The shooting was completed and wrapped on May 15, 2024.
Shiboprosad Mukherjee underwent a significant physical transformation for his role in Bohurupi, adhering to a strict diet and exercise regimen to match his character’s needs. He avoided prosthetics to maintain authenticity, relying on his natural physical features. His diet included boiled lentils, dry fruits, tea, oats, and boiled vegetables, with no carbs or oily foods, helping him reduce his weight from 78 kg to 65 kg.
During the shooting of an action scene, Shiboprosad Mukherjee sustained a mild lumbar fracture, which required bed rest. After a brief hiatus, the shooting was started again on April 27, 2024, in Kolkata. Following a speedy recovery, Mukherjee returned to complete his role towards the end of the shooting schedule.
The first look motion posters revealing the characters’ names were released in July 2024. The initial motion poster launch event took place on August 7, 2024, at “Soul — The Sky Lounge” in Kolkata, with the film’s cast in attendance. The teaser was released on 6 September 2024 on WINDOWS YouTube channel.
The first song, “Shimul Palash,” which features influences from folk and baul music, was released on September 13, 2024. It received critical acclaim from prominent musicians, including A. R. Rahman.
Bohurupi was released in theaters on October 8, 2024, coinciding with Durga Puja. The film quickly became the highest-grossing Bengali movie of 2024. It saw impressive attendance, with 132 near-houseful and 6 houseful shows on Saptami, followed by 120 near-houseful shows on Ashtami, grossing over ₹2.1 crores in its first three days. By the end of its first week, the film had grossed ₹4.98 crores, reaching ₹7.96 crores after two weeks.
