About Movie:
In 2018, Komarnicki described the film, originally titled God’s Spy, as a “profound and pretty untold story of heroism from World War II.”
In January 2023, Jonas Dassler was confirmed as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, with Flula Borg, David Jonsson, August Diehl, and Moritz Bleibtreu joining the cast. Cinematographer John Mathieson and production designer John Beard were also announced as part of the team.
Principal photography occurred in Ireland, including counties Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary, as well as St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral in Cork. Additional filming took place in Belgium, in Brussels, Liège, and Spa. According to Variety, filming wrapped before March 2023.
In November 2023, Angel Studios acquired worldwide distribution rights and retitled the film from God’s Spy to Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin. It was released in the United States on November 22, 2024.
Bonhoeffer sparked controversy ahead of its release. Critics highlighted numerous historical inaccuracies and misleading marketing, accusing the film of promoting Christian right viewpoints and conspiracy theories. Descendants of Dietrich Bonhoeffer publicly distanced themselves from the project.
