About Movie:

Devdas is a Hindi period romantic drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, based on the 1917 novel of the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film features a star-studded cast, including Shah Rukh Khan as Devdas Mukherjee, Aishwarya Rai as Parvati “Paro,” and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. The story follows Devdas, a wealthy law graduate who returns from London to marry his childhood friend, Paro, only to face rejection from his family. This rejection leads him into a downward spiral of alcoholism and despair, ultimately seeking solace in the arms of the courtesan Chandramukhi.

Bhansali was inspired to adapt Devdas after reading the novel for a second time and announced the project in November 1999. The film’s screenplay was co-written by Bhansali and Prakash Ranjit Kapadia. Extensive research on British Raj-era architecture was conducted to create authentic sets, which were built at a cost of ₹200 million (approximately US$4.12 million). Principal photography took place from November 2000 to April 2002 in locations such as Bikaner and Film City.

Devdas premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2002, in the Out of Competition section and was released worldwide on July 12, 2002. At the time, it was the most expensive Indian film ever made, with a budget of ₹500 million (approximately US$10.29 million). While it received mixed reviews at Cannes, it was better received upon its theatrical release, becoming a major commercial success and grossing approximately ₹1.68 billion (around $35 million) worldwide.
