F1 Storyline

Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.—Warner Bros. Pictures

About F1 Movie

On December 3, 2021, a bidding war commenced for an untitled film starring Brad Pitt, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing, Joseph Kosinski directing, and Ehren Kruger writing the screenplay, all of whom had previously worked on Top Gun: Maverick.

Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton was also involved in the project. Competing studios and streamers included Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, Netflix, Apple, and Amazon MGM Studios. Brad Pitt received $30 million for his role.

In November 2022, Claudio Miranda was announced as the film’s cinematographer. Damson Idris was hired in April 2023, following an extensive casting process. Kerry Condon and Tobias Menzies joined the cast shortly after, along with Sarah Niles and Simone Ashley.

Before filming, Pitt and Idris tested Formula Three and Formula Two cars at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France. Principal photography began in July 2023 at the Silverstone Circuit during the 2023 British Grand Prix weekend. Pitt drove a modified Formula 2 car with a Formula One aero-package, created in collaboration with the Mercedes-AMG F1 team and Carlin Motorsport, though not in an official F1 session.

Filming locations included the Hungaroring, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Monza Circuit, Circuit Zandvoort, Suzuka International Racing Course, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Las Vegas Strip Circuit, Yas Marina Circuit, and the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona. The #120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R competed carrying cameras, featuring a livery from the film.

At the 2023 British Grand Prix, Pitt confirmed that Javier Bardem would star in the film. Although ESPN initially reported the title as Apex, it was later retracted. On July 5, 2024, the title F1 was officially announced, with a teaser trailer premiering before the 2024 British Grand Prix.

In May 2024, Puck’s Matthew Belloni reported the film’s budget to be $300 million. Bruckheimer and Kosinski refuted the claim, noting that rebates and sponsorships significantly reduced the budget. Kosinski commented on the discrepancy, expressing uncertainty about the source of the reported figure.
