Storyline:
The story revolves around the partition of India. Tara Singh falls in love with a Muslim girl, saves her life from fellow Sikhs, and eventually, marries her. They live happily until Sakina’s father enters their life and hatches a plan to separate the two. Sakina moves to Pakistan while Tara struggles to reunite with his love.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is the second most-watched Hindi film in India since the 1990s, recording more than 50 million footfalls in India.
Director Anil Sharma’s son Utkarsh as a child artist plays Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s son.
The film was also shot in the city of Lucknow & Rudauli, Uttar Pradesh where the city was depicted as Lahore, Pakistan, and parts were shot at La Martiniere Boys School, Lucknow. Some parts were shot at Irshad Manzil Palace, Rudauli, Uttar Pradesh. A significant part was shot in Pathankot, Sarna, and Amritsar to depict the division-torn country.
It is a world record that 10 crore tickets of Gadar were sold as compared to any other film in the world.
The story of the film is loosely based on the real-life story of Boota Singh.
Gadar collected 143 crores after 18 weeks. Inflation-adjusted in 2013 equals 475 crores. The film was released on 350 screens across India.
Kajol was offered the role of Sakeena, but she turned it down as she did not feel the movie was her type of film.
Govinda was the first choice for Sunny Deol’s role. But after Maharaja flopped, Anil Sharma changed his mind
During the scene where Amisha Patil misses the train comedian Kapil Sharma was among the crowd. Kapil Sharma then a teenager managed to be part of the shoot as his father a cop was posted on duty on the shoot site for that particular day.
This is the only collaboration between Ameesha Patel and Amrish Puri.
Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was released on 15 June 2001 by Zee Telefilms. The film was re-released in theaters on 9 June 2023, for a limited period. It was remastered in 4K and Dolby Atmos, along with being an extended uncut version of the film.
