Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a fantasy adventure film directed by Chris Columbus from a screenplay by Steve Kloves. Produced by David Heyman, the film is based on the 1997 novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling and the first installment in the Harry Potter film series.

The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, with Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. When filming began, Daniel Radcliffe was 11, Emma Watson was 10, and Rupert Grint was 12.

Warner Bros. Pictures bought the film rights to the book in 1999 for a reported £1 million ($1.65 million). Production began in the United Kingdom in 2000, with Chris Columbus chosen to direct J.K. Rowling insisted that the entire cast be British and Irish, with the three leads selected in August 2000 following open casting calls.

Principal photography for the film began on September 29, 2000, at Leavesden Film Studios. Filming concluded on March 23, 2001, with final work completed in July 2001.

Alan Rickman was handpicked to play Snape by J.K. Rowling, and received special instructions from her about the character. Rowling even provided him with vital details of Snape’s backstory, not revealed until the final novel.

John Williams composed the score at his houses in Los Angeles and Tanglewood before recording it in London in August 2001.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone had its world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on November 4, 2001. It was followed by seven sequels, beginning with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002 and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.
