Storyline:

Kirik Party is the story of a gang of mischievous students, lead by the protagonist Karna (Rakshit Shetty), who have just joined an engineering college. They belong to different streams of engineering but develop a bond while staying together in the hostel. The treatment is stylish with light humour throughout while exploring the college life of these youngsters.

Karna, the protagonist from a small town has joined this engineering college and he gangs up with his hostel mates Loki, Alexander, Manja and others to fuel a lot of mischief in the college. During the first year he befriends Saanvi a Final year student and certain incidents impacts Karnas life making him question his very basic thought process.

The progression of Karna and gang from being a bunch of mischief makers to responsible adults is the theme of Kirik Party. It is a fun filled film with lots of melodious songs.

About Kirik Party Movie:

In February 2016, during the promotions of Ricky in Udupi, Rakshit Shetty revealed that his next project would be Kirik Party, with Rishab Shetty once again taking the director’s chair. He mentioned that most of the team from Ricky would return for this film, except Hariprriya, as the story required a fresh female lead. The film was planned with a budget of ₹4 crore.

In a December 2016 interview with The Times of India, Rakshit shared that he had written the story six years earlier, drawing inspiration from his college days. “Karna [his character] reflects who I was in college—a mix of my personality and my best friends’ traits. I was mischievous back then, but moving to Bengaluru made me more serious,” he added.

Filming began on 17 April 2016 with a ceremonial launch in Bangalore. By September, the team wrapped up production after shooting a “journey song” that took them to 15 locations across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Goa, covering 2,400 kilometers. A standout element in the film was a yellow Hindustan Contessa with the number plate 3636. Rishab Shetty envisioned a mute character in the story, and the modified car became an integral part of the narrative. “It’s not just about owning the car; the bond the characters develop with it makes it special. We even named it the Kirik Car,” he explained. The team spent over a month searching for the right car before settling on the Contessa for its sleek design. After the film’s release, the car was auctioned to support a social cause.

The trailer, launched by Kannada star Upendra at Renukamba Preview Theater in Malleshwaram on 27 October 2016, garnered over three lakh views within 48 hours, setting a new record for Kannada film trailers. By February 2017, it had surpassed 2 million views on YouTube. Additionally, the official Kirik Party app was launched for Android users on 20 December 2016.

Kirik Party hit theaters on 30 December 2016 across Karnataka and was later released in neighboring states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu. However, it did not release in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The film also reached international audiences in the United States, Singapore, Dubai, Japan, Israel, and parts of Europe. Despite facing competition from the Hindi blockbuster Dangal, Kirik Party enjoyed a strong domestic box-office opening. Its television premiere took place on Colors Kannada on 20 August 2017.

Kirik Party received positive reviews from critics and became one of the highest-grossing Kannada films of all time and also completed 365 days in multiplexes. It won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Family Entertainer, and was nominated in seven categories at the 64th Filmfare Awards South, winning five of them. It also received five awards at the IIFA Utsavam and seven awards at the 6th South Indian International Movie Awards. The film was remade in Telugu as Kirrak Party.
