Storyline:

Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) is a high-school senior from the “wrong side of the tracks”. She longs for adventure, sophistication, and opportunity, but finds little of that in her Sacramento Catholic high school. Her senior year improves: she finds her first romance, participates in the school play, and–most importantly–applies for college.

Lady Bird is an American coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig in her solo directorial debut. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Lois Smith.

Gerwig spent several years developing the screenplay, which at one point was over 350 pages long and initially titled Mothers and Daughters. In 2015, the project secured financing from IAC Films, with Scott Rudin Productions producing alongside Gerwig’s manager, Evelyn O’Neill, who also served as a producer.

Principal photography was delayed from March 2016 to August due to Ronan’s Broadway commitments with The Crucible. Filming began in Sacramento, California on August 30, 2016, for one week before moving to Los Angeles for five weeks. Additional scenes were shot in New York City, and production wrapped on October 1, 2016.

The film premiered at the 44th Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2017, and was theatrically released in the U.S. on November 3, 2017, by A24. It grossed $79 million, making it A24’s highest-grossing film at the time. Lady Bird received widespread critical acclaim, especially for Gerwig’s screenplay, direction, and the performances of Ronan and Metcalf.

It was considered one of the best films of 2017 and the 2010s, named in the top 10 films of 2017 by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time magazine.

At the 90th Academy Awards, Lady Bird earned five nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Metcalf), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, it won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Ronan, and was nominated for two additional awards. The film also received three BAFTA nominations and was released with an accompanying soundtrack.
