About Lee Movie:
Lee is a British biographical historical drama film directed by Ellen Kuras, adapted from the 1985 biography The Lives of Lee Miller by Antony Penrose. The film stars Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Noémie Merlant, Josh O’Connor, and Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd.
The film cast includes two Oscar winners: Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard; and one Oscar nominee: Andrea Riseborough.
The origin of the project began when cinematographer Ellen Kuras was at a bookstore in New York and spotted a tome about war photographer Lee Miller. The project was officially announced in October 2015, with Winslet attached to star as war journalist Lee Miller. Filming began in late September 2022 in Croatia.
On the first day of filming, Kate Winslet was rehearsing a sequence where Lee Miller was running down the street in Saint-Malo under bombardment in 1944, when she suffered an accident and slipped and injured her back. Winslet decided to keep filming and returned to the set that same week despite her injury, having three huge hematomas on her spine and barely being able to stand up due to the pain. Filming also took place in Hungary and wrapped in early December 2022.
The movie took eight years to make and, at one point, due to precarious funding, Kate Winslet (who also produced the movie) paid the entire cast and crew’s salaries for two weeks.
Lee had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2023. The film was released theatrically by Sky Cinema in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 13 September 2024. In February 2024, Roadside Attractions and Vertical acquired US distribution rights to the film. The film was released in United States on 27 September 2024.
