About Movie:
Les Misérables is an epic period musical film directed by Tom Hooper, adapted from the stage musical by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Herbert Kretzmer, which is itself based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel. The screenplay was written by William Nicholson, Boublil, Schönberg, and Kretzmer.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen, with Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit, and Daniel Huttlestone in supporting roles.
The film’s development was delayed for over a decade due to various studios acquiring the rights, and numerous directors and actors were considered. In 2011, producer Cameron Mackintosh sold the rights to Eric Fellner, who, along with Tim Bevan and Debra Hayward, financed the production through Working Title Films.
With a production budget of $61 million, principal photography began on March 8, 2012, in Gourdon, with additional locations in England, including Boughton House, Winchester College, Chatham Dockyard, and Pinewood Studios. A notable set piece was a replica of the Elephant of the Bastille, built in Greenwich, which echoes Gavroche’s home in Hugo’s novel.
Les Misérables premiered in London on December 5, 2012, and was released in the U.S. on December 25, 2012, followed by a U.K. release on January 11, 2013. The film received positive reviews for its direction, production values, musical numbers, and performances, especially those of Jackman, Hathaway, Redmayne, Seyfried, Tveit, and Barks. However, Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Javert and his singing received criticism.
The film grossed $442.8 million worldwide and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three. It is widely regarded as one of the best musical films of the 21st century.
In 2024, a digitally remixed and remastered version of the film was released in Dolby Cinema in the U.K. on February 14 and in the U.S. on February 23, celebrating the stage musical’s upcoming 40th anniversary in 2025.
