About Movie:

Love & Other Drugs is based on Jamie Reidy’s 2005 non-fiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.

Principal photography began on September 21, 2009, in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania region. The city was selected for its atmosphere, rich medical history, Pennsylvania’s tax incentives, and experienced local crews. Filming locations included Pittsburgh suburbs such as McCandless, Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Aliquippa, and Brownsville. Key spots included Mellon Arena, Jane Street in the South Side, the Omni William Penn Hotel, The Capital Grille, and Station Square. Pittsburgh also doubled as Chicago for certain scenes, with the production studio housed in a former limousine car park.

The opening scene, where Jake Gyllenhaal’s character works in an audio/video store, was filmed at the former Don Allen Car Dealership on Baum Blvd and S. Atlantic Avenue. By 2014, the building had been demolished.

Director Edward Zwick reportedly joined Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal naked in bed for a group shot to help them feel more comfortable. This image was later used for the film’s poster, with Zwick digitally removed.

For their roles, Gyllenhaal spent time with Jamie Reidy, the author of the book, while Hathaway worked with actress Lucy Roucis, who lived with Parkinson’s disease and appeared in the film. Hathaway also lost weight for the role to reflect the physical toll of Parkinson’s disease on newly diagnosed patients.

The film’s sex scenes sparked lighthearted remarks from the cast. Gyllenhaal joked that pretending to be turned on by Hathaway was one of his most challenging roles, while Hathaway shared an anecdote about accidentally getting nude during rehearsal when the cameras weren’t rolling, which she took in stride due to her comfort with the crew.

Love & Other Drugs was released on November 24, 2010, by 20th Century Fox. It grossed $105 million against a $30 million budget and received mixed reviews from critics.
