About M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story Movie:
M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is a Hindi biographical sports drama film about the life of former Test, ODI, and T20I captain of the Indian national cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It was directed by Neeraj Pandey, who co-wrote it with Dilip Jha.
It is Neeraj Pandey’s fourth critically acclaimed film after “A Wednesday (2008)”, “Special 26 (2013)” and “Baby (2015)” as the director and Anupam Kher has appeared in all of these films in lead or supporting roles.
The film stars the late Sushant Singh Rajput as MS Dhoni, along with Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, Anupam Kher, Bhumika Chawla, Kranti Prakash Jha, and Alok Pandey. The film marks Disha Patani’s debut.
The idea for the biopic was proposed by Dhoni’s manager, Arun Pandey, after an incident at an airport following the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final. Development began two years later with Dhoni’s consent. Neeraj Pandey was then approached to direct the film while he was working on Baby (2015). Pandey recruited several people to research Dhoni’s background and his life events.
Before signing of the film cast, Akshay Kumar was showing a lot of interest in playing Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s role but, due to less similarity between Dhoni and his looks, the director of the movie Neeraj Pandey politely denied him.
Sushant Singh Rajput had to grow his hair long for the character as Mahendra Singh Dhoni sported long hair in his early career which became quite famous.
Sushant Singh Rajput got injured while practicing Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s famous helicopter shot. And later was trained by Dhoni himself. Mrs. Sakhshi Dhoni gave her actual Wedding dress for this movie’s wedding scene.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni was 30 years old when he won World Cup for India in 2011. Sushant Singh Rajput was also 30 years old when he did the film. The film starts and ends with a background of the World Cup 2011.
The film’s teaser trailer was released on March 15, 2016, the day the 2016 ICC World T20 started. The first official poster was released on July 7, 2016, on Dhoni’s 35th birthday.
M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story was released on September 30, 2016, by Fox Star Studios and received the widest release ever for a Bollywood film across 61 countries. In addition to being released in Hindi language, it was also dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi languages, although the Marathi release was later canceled due to opposition.
The film was declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav a day after its release, and in Dhoni’s home state, Jharkhand, a few days later.
Upon release, the film became a critical and commercial success. It is the fifth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2016 and the sixth highest-grossing Indian film of 2016 worldwide ₹215.48 crore (US$26 million).
