M3GAN 2.0 is the follow-up to the 2022 science fiction horror hit M3GAN, which received extremely positive reviews from critics and grossed over $181 million at the worldwide box office on its budget of $12 million.

Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, and Jenna Davis return to star, with Gerard Johnstone also returning to direct the film. Akela Cooper returns as writer, as she co-wrote the original film with James Wan.

In November 2022, even before the release of the first film, Universal Pictures was pleased with M3GAN’s projected box office performance and had plans for a sequel.

On 18 January 2023, hardly more than one and a half weeks after the success of the first film, the sequel was announced. A few weeks later, Universal officially confirmed the sequel’s release date and revealed the title as M3GAN 2.0.

Principal photography began on July 15, 2024, in Auckland, New Zealand, and concluded on September 21 and was a 52-day shoot.

M3GAN 2.0 Storyline (Plot)

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.

Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.

With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I icon is about to meet her match.

M3GAN 2.0 is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 27, 2025. The film was originally scheduled to be released on January 17, 2025, and May 16, 2025.
