Storyline:
While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed (and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole) that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents. “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?
About Series:
In 2018, Ryan Murphy signed a $300 million deal with Netflix to create original television shows. On October 2, 2020, Netflix greenlit a limited series titled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, co-created by Murphy and Ian Brennan, focusing on the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Evan Peters, who portrayed Dahmer, reportedly stayed in character for months to prepare for the role.
On November 7, 2022, Netflix announced the series would be renewed as an anthology, simply titled Monster, focusing on famous convicted killers. It received a two-season order, with the second season centering on the Menendez brothers’ murder case, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
On September 16, 2024, Netflix announced that the third season would focus on convicted murderer Ed Gein, titled The Original Monster. This season is set to begin production in October 2024 and will explore Gein’s life as the first “celebrity serial killer” and how true crime evolved into a pop culture phenomenon.
Principal photography for the first season took place in Los Angeles, San Pedro, and Altadena. The second season’s production was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes but commenced in March 2024 and wrapped in July 2024, also in Los Angeles.
The first season, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was released on September 21, 2022, and the second season, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, was released on September 19, 2024. The first two seasons received mixed reviews but were commercially successful, reaching the number-one spot on Netflix shortly after release. Dahmer – Monster became Netflix’s second most-watched English-language series of all time, amassing over 1 billion hours viewed within 60 days.
It received four nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards and six nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, with Niecy Nash winning for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
