Storyline:

It is the story of Neerja Bhanot, a courageous 23-year-old air hostess, who sacrificed her life while protecting the lives of 359 passengers on Pan Am Flight 73 in 1986 when it was hijacked by a terrorist organization.

About Neerja Movie:

Neerja is a Hind biographical thriller drama film starring Sonam Kapoor in the lead, with Shekhar Ravjiani, Shabana Azmi, Yogendra Tiku, Kavi Shastri, and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles.

The film is based on a real-life event: the attempted hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan by Libyan-backed Abu Nidal Organization on September 5, 1986. Neerja Bhanot’s family charged no money for the rights to the story.

The film was directed by Ram Madhvani and written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh. It was produced by Atul Kasbekar’s company, Bling Unplugged, in collaboration with Fox Star Studios.

Development of the film began in September 2014. Principal photography of the film commenced on April 19, 2015, in Mumbai and was completed on June 19, 2015. The entire movie was shot with no camera lights. It was completely done on natural and ambient light.

Neerja was released on February 19, 2016, to critical acclaim and became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films featuring a female protagonist. The film grossed ₹135.52 crore (US$16 million) at the box office against a budget of ₹20 crore.

The film was declared tax-free by the Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh governments.

The film received widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades from Bollywood award organizations, with particular praise for Sonam Kapoor’s performance and Ram Madhvani’s direction. At the 64th National Film Awards, it won two awards: Best Feature Film in Hindi and a Special Mention for Kapoor.

At the 62nd Filmfare Awards, Neerja received 8 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director (Madhvani), and won a leading 6 awards, including Best Film (Critics), Best Actress (Critics) (Kapoor), and Best Supporting Actress (Azmi).

On its first day, Neerja earned about ₹47 crore (US$560,000) net, much of it from Mumbai and Delhi NCR. The film had grossed an estimated ₹108 crore (US$13 million) domestically and ₹25.9 crore (US$3.1 million) internationally, for an approximate worldwide total of ₹135 crore (US$16 million).
