About Nonnas Movie

Nonnas is an American biographical comedy-drama film which was directed by Stephen Chbosky, was written by Liz Maccie, and starred Vince Vaughn, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro with Linda Cardellini and Susan Sarandon.

Nonnas is based on the life of Joe Scaravella, owner of the Staten Island restaurant Enoteca Maria, who gives everything away to honor his recently deceased, beloved mother, and opens an Italian restaurant, with real grandmothers as chefs.

A collaboration of Fifth Season, 1Community, Madison Wells, and Matador Content, the movie was available on Netflix on May 9, 2025, received mostly favorable reviews. The movie was released during Mother’s Day weekend in the United States, and reached No. 1 in the country.

Filming took place from May to June 2023 in various locations in New Jersey, including Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Paterson, Linden, Elizabeth, and Edison.

In September 2024, Netflix won the worldwide distribution rights to the film in an auction for over $20 million.
