Storyline:

Joanna and Grant Stayton III are an extremely wealthy, pretentious couple who live aboard their yacht. They live off of Joanna’s family’s money. She is a bitch of a woman, who treats others poorly and thinks nothing about doing whatever she needs to get what she wants, which she always gets. So when their yacht is moored in Elk Cove, Oregon and she hires local carpenter Dean Proffitt to do some work, she has no qualms of stiffing him the $600 for the job when it doesn’t meet what she wanted, despite her not specifying the issue to him beforehand. When she and Grant sail out of Elk Cove, she falls overboard, the resulting injury which causes temporary amnesia. Grant sees this accident as his opportunity to ditch her. When news of a Jane Doe (Joanna) hits the local news and Dean sees that the person he knows as Grant denies knowing her, he also sees an opportunity: he will claim to be her husband and make her his housemaid – which includes her taking care of his four rambunctious sons – for about a month, which he considers the equivalent of what she owes him. “Annie” (what they end up calling her) is still a bitch of a woman. As time goes on, Dean has second thoughts about what he is doing, not because of Annie being like Joanna, but because he is falling in love with her and it seems like she is doing vice versa. Can their love overcome the obstacles of her equally pretentious mother looking for her, or the time when she will ultimately regain her memory?

Principal photography for Overboard took place at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles, with additional filming in Fort Bragg and Mendocino, California, as well as Newport, Oregon.

The film was released on December 18, 1987, to mixed reviews but achieved box office success. It grossed $1.9 million in its opening weekend, $2.9 million in its second (+34%), and $3.9 million in its third (+54%), totaling $26.7 million by the end of its theatrical run. Considered a classic by some, Overboard has been remade and adapted several times.

A reimagined version starring Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez was released on May 4, 2018. In this version, the roles are reversed, with Derbez playing a wealthy man who falls off his yacht and is found by Faris’ character, a single mother who convinces him he is her husband.

The film inspired several loose adaptations, including the 1992 Hindi film Ek Ladka Ek Ladki, directed by Vijay Sadanah and starring Salman Khan and Neelam Kothari, and the 1997 Malayalam film Mayaponman.

The 2006 South Korean TV show Couple or Trouble, directed by Kim Sang Ho and starring Han Ye-seul and Oh Ji-ho, is also a loose adaptation, as is the 2012 Swiss film Liebe und Andere Unfälle. The 2013 Russian miniseries Wife Rented (Zhena naprokat, Жена напрокат) and the Egyptian uncredited remake Mecanica (ميكانيكا), starring Nelli and Youcef Mansour, further reflect the story’s enduring appeal.
