Storyline:

The film follows Percy Jackson, a young demigod who learns that he is the son of Poseidon. After being accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, Percy embarks on a quest to retrieve it and clear his name. Accompanied by his friends Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, he faces various challenges rooted in Greek mythology as they travel across the United States.

Production Details

20th Century Fox acquired the film rights to the Percy Jackson series in 2004, with Chris Columbus hired to direct in 2007. Filming began in April 2009 in Vancouver, with additional scenes shot in Tennessee, Las Vegas, and New York City.

Release and Reception

The film was released theatrically in the United States on February 12, 2010. It received mixed reviews from critics, who criticized its handling of the source material but praised the performances of Lerman and Jackson, as well as its visual effects and action sequences. The film grossed approximately $226.4 million worldwide against a production budget of around $95 million.

Home Media and Legacy

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 29, 2010. A video game based on the film was also released for Nintendo DS on February 11, 2010. A sequel titled Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters was released on August 7, 2013. Overall, while it faced criticism from fans of the book series for its deviations, The Lightning Thief introduced a new audience to Greek mythology through a contemporary lens.
