Storyline:

After Santa Claus (code name: Red One) is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Dwayne Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.

Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, Kasdan, Melvin Mar, and Morgan serve as the film’s producers.

According to reports Dwayne Johnson was paid $50 million for his involvement.

This is Jake Kasdan and Dwayne Johnson’s first collaboration outside the Jumanji franchise and their first collaboration with Bonnie Hunt, who starred in Jumanji (1995).

The project is seen as the first of a potential franchise, reimagining holiday mythology, produced by Amazon MGM Studios under the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer banner in association with Seven Bucks Productions, The Detective Agency, and Chris Morgan Productions.

Filming for the movie began in October 2022 in Atlanta and concluded in February 2023. The production faced significant scheduling challenges due to Dwayne Johnson, who was frequently seven to eight hours late and missed several days of shooting. These delays reportedly increased the budget by $50 million, bringing the total to $250 million. However, this figure has since been disputed.

“Red One” was initially slated for a worldwide Prime Video release during Christmas 2023. However, the release was postponed from December 20, 2023, to November 15, 2024, due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and a decision to launch the film theatrically worldwide. Dwayne Johnson advocated for an IMAX release after attending an IMAX screening of “Oppenheimer,” believing the format would elevate the film’s impact.

Red One was first released internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures on November 6, 2024, and in the United States by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on November 15, 2024. Despite its large budget of $200–$250 million, the film was a box-office bomb, earning only $166.5 million worldwide. It also received mostly negative reviews from critics.

Red One was released on Prime Video on December 12, 2024

Select footage premiered at CinemaCon in April 2024, with journalists invited under non-disclosure agreements prohibiting written coverage.
