Retro OTT Release Date: When and Where to Stream Suriya’s Tamil Romantic Action Drama

Suriya’s much-anticipated Tamil film Retro has made a significant impact since its theatrical release on May 1, 2025. Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, debuted with Pizza (2012) as a director starring Vijay Sethupathi and Remya Nambeesan, establishing Sethupathi and Karthik as leading actor and director in Tamil cinema. Karthik is known for Petta (2019), Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023), Mahaan (2022), Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020), and Jagame Thandhiram (2021).

Pooja Hegde plays the female lead opposite Suriya, marking her first film with both Suriya and Subbaraj. The film is her third Tamil film after Mugamoodi (2012) and Beast (2022). She dubbed for her own voice, the first time for a Tamil film. It also stars Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Vidhu, Karunakaran, Gajaraj, and Swasika in other prominent roles.

The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Suriya and Hegde’s performances and technical aspects, but some noted issues with the pacing. It eventually emerged as a major commercial success, grossing more than ₹235 crore and becoming one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2025, and has been reported as Suriya’s highest-grossing film to date.

For fans eager to watch the film from the comfort of their homes, Netflix acquired the digital rights of the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions of the movie for a record amount of ₹80 crores (US$9.5 million). In addition, the Hindi digital rights sold for ₹25 crores (US$3.0 million).

The movie is expected to premiere on the streaming platform on June 5, 2025, roughly a month after its theatrical debut, following the typical window observed in the Indian film industry. This release will make the film accessible in multiple Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, broadening its reach to a diverse audience.

The film has music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, making his eighth collaboration with the director. Shreyaas Krishna handles the cinematography, in his third collaboration with Subbaraj after Jagame Thandhiram (2021) and Mahaan (2022), and editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali.
