Storyline:
Sylvester Stallone returns to the character which made him famous in this wildly successful sequel. Rocky III starts with the Italian Stallion so famous that his likeness is everywhere, including pinball machines. Fame and complacency soon cause Balboa to lose his title to young thug Clubber Lang ( Mr. T ), who inadvertently causes the death of Rocky’s beloved trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), before their first championship bout. After sinking into a depression, Balboa must regain the love and support of his family, as well as the elusive “eye of the tiger,” the hungry need to beat the opponent which former foe Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) teaches him during this film’s training sequence. In the end, Balboa faces off against Lang for a second time.
About Movie:
Rocky III is an American sports drama written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone. The film, a sequel to Rocky II (1979) and the third installment in the Rocky series, also features Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, and Burgess Meredith.
Development started soon after Rocky II’s release. Stallone adopted a strict diet and workout routine for the film. Although the return of the original cast was quickly secured, casting for the antagonist, Clubber Lang, was challenging. Real boxers Joe Frazier and Earnie Shavers were considered before Mr. T was cast in 1981, following his appearance on Games People Play. This role is widely regarded as Mr. T’s breakthrough.
Rocky III is the first film in the franchise not distributed solely by United Artists, due to its merger with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1981.
Released on May 28, 1982, by MGM/UA Entertainment Co., the film received mixed reviews. Critics praised its action sequences and music but criticized the screenplay, with some questioning the film’s necessity. However, retrospective reviews have been more favorable, and the film has developed a strong cult following.
Rocky III grossed $270 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise at that time and the second highest-grossing film of 1982 globally. Its theme song, “Eye of the Tiger,” became a hit and earned a nomination for Best Original Song at the 55th Academy Awards. The sequel, Rocky IV, was released in 1985.
