Along with much scary movie trivia, ending with bloody pieces of innocent lives scattered around the small town of Woodsboro.
About Movie:
Scream is a 1996 American slasher film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The movie stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore.
Williamson wrote the screenplay, inspired by the Gainesville Ripper murders and slasher films like Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Initially titled Scary Movie, the script sparked a bidding war, ultimately acquired by Miramax Films. Craven, after multiple rejections, agreed to direct the film to rejuvenate his career. The involvement of Barrymore and Cox helped solidify studio support.
Principal photography ran from April to June 1996 in California with a budget of $15 million. Craven fought hard with the MPAA to secure an R-rating, trimming some of the film’s violence.
Released on December 20, 1996, Scream defied expectations and grossed approximately $173 million worldwide, becoming one of the year’s top earners. Critics praised the cast’s performances and the film’s clever meta-humor, though some criticized its level of violence and lack of suspense in favor of that humor. The film revitalized the slasher genre in the 1990s and boosted the careers of its cast and Williamson.
Scream is now seen as a classic in horror cinema, often credited with reviving interest in the genre during the 1990s. Its success paved the way for a multimedia franchise, including five sequels (Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4, Scream (2022), Scream VI), and an anthology TV series. The film also helped attract prominent actors to the horror genre and increased its appeal to younger audiences.
