Storyline:
Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
About Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie:
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the third film in the franchise based on Sega’s video game series, following Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022).
In March 2020, James Marsden revealed he had signed on for multiple sequels. By February 2022, Sega Sammy Group and Paramount Pictures were developing the third film, officially announced during ViacomCBS’s investor event, alongside a spin-off series Knuckles for Paramount+.
The film draws inspiration from the games Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), featuring elements such as the Chao creatures.
Second-unit filming began in July 2023 in Farnham, Surrey, focusing on animated characters due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Principal photography, originally planned for August 31, 2023, in London, was delayed and began on November 29 with physical actors. A teaser image of Shadow the Hedgehog’s stand-in statue was released, with Brandon Trost returning as cinematographer and Luke Freeborn as production designer.
Jim Carrey was confirmed in February 2024 to reprise his role, while Keanu Reeves was announced in April 2024 as the voice of Shadow. Filming concluded on March 14, 2024, according to Marsden, with director Jeff Fowler officially wrapping production on March 29.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to release in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2024, taking over the slot originally reserved for The Smurfs Movie (2025). The UK release will follow on December 21.
In September 2024, producer Toby Ascher expressed plans for additional installments in the franchise after Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
