Storyline:

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all of the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him — as well as everyone around him — as the walls between his compartments shatter.

Split is an American psychological thriller written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, starring James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Betty Buckley.

Filming began on November 11, 2015, in Philadelphia, with reshoots occurring in June 2016. Sterling K. Brown’s role was cut during post-production as Shyamalan deemed it unnecessary. McAvoy broke his hand during a scene where he accidentally hit a metal door.

The film premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2016, and was released in the U.S. on January 20, 2017, by Universal Pictures. It received positive reviews, with critics praising McAvoy’s performance and Shyamalan’s direction, though some mental health advocates criticized its portrayal of mental illness.

Split became a commercial hit, grossing $278 million worldwide on a $9 million budget, making it Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing film until 2023 when Five Nights at Freddy’s surpassed it.

Although Split was not marketed as a sequel, it was later revealed to be a standalone follow-up to Shyamalan’s 2000 film Unbreakable, featuring a surprise cameo by Bruce Willis. This twist earned the film the label of the first “stealth sequel” and the first solo supervillain origin movie. The story concluded with the 2019 film Glass, which united the characters from both Unbreakable and Split, completing Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy.
