Storyline:
In a small town where everyone knows everyone, a peculiar incident starts a chain of events that leads to a child’s disappearance, which begins to tear at the fabric of an otherwise-peaceful community. Dark government agencies and seemingly malevolent supernatural forces converge on the town, while a few of the locals begin to understand that more is going on than meets the eye.
About Series:
Matt and Ross Duffer, known as the Duffer Brothers, created Stranger Things as a blend of investigative drama and supernatural horror, infused with childlike sensibilities and 1980s pop culture references. The series draws inspiration from the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, David Lynch, Stephen King, Wes Craven, and H. P. Lovecraft, as well as Cold War experiments and conspiracy theories about secret government programs.
Originally, the Duffer Brothers wanted to film in Long Island to match their initial concept of Montauk. However, due to the cold weather in November 2015, they shifted their focus to the Atlanta, Georgia area. Growing up in North Carolina, they found many locations that reminded them of their childhoods and felt the area was a perfect fit for the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.
Filming for the first season began in November 2015, mostly in Atlanta, with the Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy directing individual episodes. Jackson served as the model for Hawkins, Indiana, and other locations included the Georgia Mental Health Institute as the Hawkins National Laboratory, Bellwood Quarry, and Patrick Henry High School in Stockbridge for school scenes. Additional filming took place at Emory University, the former city hall in Douglasville, Georgia, and several other locations across the state. Set work was done at Screen Gems Studios in Atlanta, and the series was filmed using a RED Dragon camera. Production concluded in early 2016.
After the third season finished filming, there was consideration of turning the Starcourt Mall set into a permanent attraction for fans, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.
The fourth season was expected to consist of eight episodes, with the first titled “Chapter One: The Hellfire Club.” Filming was scheduled to begin in January 2020 and run through August. A teaser in February 2020 confirmed production had started, with some scenes filmed at Lukiškės Prison in Vilnius, Lithuania. However, production was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before resuming in September 2020.
Filming for the fifth and final season was expected to start in June 2023, according to David Harbour, but was delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.
Release
The first season of Stranger Things premiered on Netflix on July 15, 2016, with eight one-hour-long episodes, available worldwide in Ultra HD 4K. The second season, consisting of nine episodes, was released on October 27, 2017, in HDR. The third season, with eight episodes, followed on July 4, 2019. The fourth season, also consisting of nine episodes, was released in two volumes on May 27 and July 1, 2022. In February 2022, Netflix renewed the series for a fifth and final season.
After the release of the fourth season, viewers pointed out that Will’s friends did not acknowledge his birthday in an episode set on that day. The Duffer Brothers addressed this in an interview, suggesting they could “George Lucas” the situation, referring to changes made to the original Star Wars trilogy to align with the prequels. Some viewers speculated that scenes from earlier seasons might also be edited, such as a moment where Jonathan secretly takes photos of a pool party involving Steve, Nancy, and Barbara. However, the writers confirmed that no scenes from previous seasons had been cut or re-edited, including that particular scene.
