About Movie:
The Brutalist is a historical drama directed by Brady Corbet, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mona Fastvold. It’s an international co-production between the United States, United Kingdom, and Hungary, featuring an ensemble cast including Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Alessandro Nivola, Jonathan Hyde, and Guy Pearce.
Brady Corbet selected The Brutalist as his next project following the premiere of his previous film Vox Lux (2018), as reported by Deadline on September 6, 2018. Originally, filming was scheduled to begin in 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with subsequent postponements pushing the start to January 2021, then to August 2021, and again to late spring 2022.
Key crew members were announced in 2023, including director of photography Lol Crawley, editor Dávid Jancsó, costume designer Kate Forbes (March 9, 2023), and production designer Judy Becker (April 11, 2023). Daniel Blumberg was selected to compose the score. After several delays, filming finally began in Budapest, Hungary on March 16, 2023, before moving to Carrara, Italy, on April 29, 2023, and wrapping on May 5, 2023.
Shot using the VistaVision process, The Brutalist was filmed sideways on 35mm film stock, later rotated and scanned at 70mm-equivalent resolution, with plans for a 70mm release.
The film premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2024, where it competed for the Golden Lion and earned Corbet the Silver Lion. It also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024. A24 acquired U.S. distribution rights for just under $10 million after a competitive bidding process, with a planned release date of December 20, 2024.
